
This rifle is currently marketed to boaters and campers who desire a lightweight takedown semi-automatic rifle that can be carried inside a small compact waterproof case. The AR-7 rifle is now called the Henry US Survival Rifle. When they began production of the rifle in 1998, the new Henry AR-7 gradually began to build a reputation for being a reliable firearm (unlike its predecessors). Henry also decided to use superior quality materials to make the different parts of the rifle. However, before beginning production Henry reverse engineered the rifle and they corrected a few minor problems with the original design. In 1997 Henry Repeating Arms acquired the rights to manufacture the rifle. Therefore ArmaLite made a few minor changes to the design of the rifle so it could be sold to civilians.

However, the military only purchased a few of these rifles and the rifle was never issued to the military in quantity.
